RevSlider slow loading times

My homepage with the revslider is taking a long time to load. I get a tinted white box with a progress wheel before and after my slider finally loads. These are the steps I’ve taken to try to fix the problem:

- optimized images and graphics
- I used a shortcode on the homepage
- installed performance plugin W3 Total Cache
- used Google’s Webmaster Tools to identify page speed and possible suggestions (it reports that there are a number of js and css code that needs to load above the fold before the user can continue)
