Update to Terra & changes

HI, I’m not very technically savvy so sorry if this is a stupid question. I want to finally update the Terra theme and was looking at the instructions. It said if I made any changes I would need to merge my files and not simply replace them. What kind of changes qualify? Do you mean changes to the code itself (above my abilities) or just cosmetic changes available within the theme like background color or other settings.
