I have fortuna which looks great but it’s so so slow, Google is saying Compression is a huge issue!

I understand your concern.
Which point of the optimizations have you done? On the Demo we improved performance 400-500% after completing all the steps.
I think you still haven’t made most of them, like combining JS and CSS files + minifying them. Also using a Cache plugin helps a lot. How about CDN? :)

We have tried all of the steps you suggest via a CDN as soon as we use the compression tool suggested the website displays terribly.

Well you must have something going wrong in the setup of those tools then, please make sure everything is operating as it should, I guarantee once set things up as in the guides things will be much faster.
Another thing you could do to speed things up would be to remove the Parallax and video backgrounds plugin (not required but still a bit heavy).
