My images are uploading very dark and none of the filters are helping. Is there a setting I need to turn on/off to make sure my images upload the correct colors? or do I need to save the images in a specific way in photoshop?

What do you mean they upload dark?? The Image upload is in no way related to the theme except for the fact that some custom thumbnail sizes are set for it.
Check if you maybe have some plugin that messes with theme or maybe a filtering of some sort.
