I’d like to display content in a modal popup or a lightbox. For example when clicking on a Fortuna button, a modal/lightbox opens with some text and a form for newsletter subscriptions. Any recommendations how to do this within Fortuna?

Sure, the theme implements the awesome Magnific Jquery popup plugin:

Please check the examples shown there.
Obviously you would have to set up a combination of some script (use the Raw JS element) + a button element (with a custom CSS class). :)

“Please activate your copy of the Visual Composer Modal Popups to get update notifications, access to support features & other resources!”

Clicking on the link results in an error page that I do not have sufficient rights to see the page requested.

The support guys of the plugin say:

“Your theme author has disabled all the registration for our all the product, so that is why you cannot activate the licence of modal pop up.”

Any chance to register additional plugins with Visual Composer?

Nothing is disabled really, apart from setting VC to be in Theme mode in your functions.php:

You can try commenting it out:
