The featured images uploaded should have a uniform size, as yours have different dimensions even after the automatic resizing the get cropped with the different dimensions, so in order to unify them you can upload images with the same dimensions.

The other issue, yes you can override the template for the single post (post.php) to change the layout of template. What’s your URL please?
