No, this is not possible in general in WordPress, custom post types do need their slugs:

I tried to remove the slUg and I was able to do that. However, when I create new portfolio image, it shows a new page bUt when I pUblish it or view any of my exisiting portfolio page, it shows 404 error : page not foUnd.

CoUld yoU tell me where I shoUld make changes to implement. I jUst changed slUg in fUnctions.php
