Hi,

I’ve been trying to do things to speed up my site, based on results from pingdom, gtmetrix and google tools. I’ve done pretty much everything that is within my limited ability! So far the speed has gone from about ~8secs to ~3secs.

There’s just a couple of queries i have:
1) Do you have any plans to include any of the background images, social icons etc, into a sprite? I did have a play around myself, using various web tools, with limited success. I was just trying to do the social icons, but i couldn;t achieve the rotating look, instead of revolving vertically, they were revolving sideways which doesn’t look quite the same.

2) I was also wondering about all the style sheets. I use a child theme, and I use @import to import all the style sheets. If for example i don’t use the carousel, i omitted the @import for carousel, but it makes no difference, and the carousel style sheet is being called. Do you use wp_enqueue_style() to call the style sheets (http://wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/43690/do-i-only-need-to-import-style-css-for-a-child-theme)? Then i could use wp_dequeue_style() to make sure that style sheets that aren’t used don’t get called. Or do you have another suggestion so that style sheets that aren’t used don;t get called?

Many thanks

Angus

Hi Angus,

First off you could Minify the JS, I have not done so by default as it’s easier to edit this way by clients. Then you could minify your CSS. You can see I use @import in my style.css to include the custom CSS files further…
Also make sure your images are all well optimized etc. Spriting the Social icons wouldn’t affect your speed much, I will look into updating that in the future though, thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for getting back to me. The CSS and JS are mostly minified, images are optimized, the site is cached, i’m using cloudfare, and i’ve done quite of other tinkering! And so far its at around 2.5secs for the page speed. I managed to sprite many of the background images, which made a small difference. Other than a few other small things, i think changing host and using a CDN are the only things that will make a difference.

I have been reading that avoiding the @import can help improve page speed.

Anyway, anything you can do to help speed up the theme in the next update would be fantastic.

Thanks
