It would only have the content area in case we want to create landing pages without additional clutter. Kind of like http://www.amplifiedresults.com/landing-page-centered and http://www.amplifiedresults.com/landing-page-right/ which are built entirely with Visual Composer, including header and the footer modules.

Yes, as of the latest version (1.1) you can switch off the header and footer sections and create fully custom pages like this. The options are under Page Settings so you can manage this for each page individually. :)
