I then added tabs, dropped the first Carousel in the first tab item then cloned the tab. The cloned tab doesn’t work properly – it shows thumbnails of the images instead of just 2 at a time.

This is the correct display:

Here is the cloned tab – shows all images as thumbnails.
Bad display

I double-checked the settings in the cloned image carousel and they are exactly the same as the first carousel. I then deleted the cloned image carousel, row, tab item and did everything manually but have the same result. Confused.

In responsive mode this would also be rather messy.
In your case, the carousels initialize by calculating parent element’s size in order to setup and distribute the items correctly. The second tab’s not loaded and it’s content is not set at page load so the carousel cannot calculate its items correct size…
