I want to finally update the Terra theme and was looking at the instructions. It said if I made any changes I would need to merge my files and not simply replace them. What kind of changes qualify? Do you mean changes to the code itself (above my abilities) or just cosmetic changes available within the theme like background color or other settings.

Changes in the admin like colors, theme options etc won’t matter, you will keep those after you update. Just to make sure you can always make a backup before updating. I use the Duplicator plugin.
