On my homepage I am trying to achieve a background image with text overlay.
Something is happening to push the image down and it’s not appearing correctly…it’s the block with this tex:

Nothing out of the ordinary, I think you are simply misusing the Transparent header.
Check the other topic where I pasted links to the documentation, hope that sheds some light on the way things work. :)
