You are missing Step 3 – Create one extra Menu item to parent each column menu items. For example in the example below we have a Megamenu under the Features top level item. We have the Mega Menu split into 3 columns (because of the mm-col-3 class) and we have 3 menu items (Shortcodes, Shrtcodes cont. & Features) below the top level item Features. Those 3 will appear as headings in the MegaMenu columns. If you want to hide the heading of a column you can do so by simply adding a mm_hide class to the column Parent item.
