I’ve noticed their size is fixed, which means that if an item or heading is too large, it will “invade” the column on its right side.

No, the size of the columns are fixed according to how many columns you want there.
What you can do instead is set the text in a megamenu item to wrap to a second line instead of being forced to “nowrap”.
Try this:

#menu > ul > li.megamenu > div >  ul.sub-menu > li a {
white-space: initial;
