In Theme Options > Portfolio, what are the Portfolio preset styles 1-9 and can I see examples of these somewhere? Changing them doesn’t seem to affect anything.

Yes, they are. Those settings in the Theme options are used in the Portfolio Template page (the one with the drop-down category filter). If you are using a regular portfolio grid element on a normal page then you have the Style preset as a separate setting in the element itself. Hope that makes sense… :)
