Is there an automated way or should I translate in the .php files?

You need to use a plugin, first pick one, there are quite a few options out there: PolyLang, qTranslate, WPML.
Then you need to translate the PO & MO files (that include the theme strings) that come with the theme, upload your new files that follow your new lang nomenclature and switch your lang in the dashboard.
