On my live site I have the current version of VC but on my staging site I updated to Version 5.0 and I am still seeing these issues.

When I switched to a different theme I saw visual composer so I am pretty sure its a theme issue.

On both the I cannot toggle between visual and text editor and the VC button does not appear.

After further investigation it seems that when a specific plugin called “Insert or Embed Articulate Content into WordPress Trial” is deactivated I can toggle between visual and text editor and see the visual composer button.

However when I switched to a different theme with the plugin activated that also solved the problem so I don’t know if its a plugin issue or theme issue. I updated the plugin 2 days ago and I’ve asked the developer for the previous version.

When I click on the toggle I see the following javascript errors
Method value does not exist on jQuery.tooltip(…)
TypeError: Cannot read property ‘hasClass’ of undefined(…)

Maybe(obviously) it conflicts with the theme in some way and the VC button disappearance is just a result of that JS error.
What does that plugin do?
No such method in our theme “tooltip” …
maybe it’s in the plugin?

It’s really not up to us to test and fix 3rd party plugins’ issues and incompatibilities with the theme… I would just look for an alternative of the plugin or ask the vendor if you could easily change some bit of code in there so that it runs smoothly, it’s their code after all and that should hardly take a long time.
