Index page layout

Are you able to offer any help on how i can adjust the index.php, so that the first post can be styled differently?

I’m not using any galleries so it doesn’t matter if thats affected.

Also, i received an email saying there is a new update available, are you able to tell me where i look to see what the changes are?
