Shortcodes buttons not visible

I have installed and activated the theme, imported demo content, installed the slider revolution plugin and it all works except:

when I create or edit a new post, the shortcodes buttons are not visible in the editor (they should appear after the standard WordPress buttons).

Wordpress version is 4.8. I have tried to change browser (Chrome, Safari on Mac), but it is not a browser issue.
